Ground-Up vs Rebuild

New asphalt installation is what we do when there’s no existing pavement to work with — a bare-earth new-build. New construction driveways for spec homes, new access roads on rural properties, new parking lots for commercial ground-up projects, or replacing something entirely non-asphalt (grass, dirt, gravel) with a proper paved surface.

This is different from a rebuild, which involves tearing out an existing failed surface and starting over. New installations have the advantage of a clean starting point, but the disadvantage that the sub-grade has never been engineered — whatever the native soil is, that’s what you’re building on until you fix it.

Sub-Grade Engineering

The single most important step in new asphalt is preparing the sub-grade properly, and on NW Louisiana clay that means real work: strip vegetation and topsoil, cut to grade with proper drainage slope (minimum 1%, preferably 1.5% for driveways), compact in lifts to 95% Standard Proctor, verify moisture content, and consider a cement-treated stabilization layer for soft or highly-plastic areas.

Geotextile fabric over the compacted sub-grade adds $0.30–$0.60/sqft and pays back many times over on our clay: it separates the crushed-stone base from the sub-grade, prevents base migration, and reduces edge slumping. For any new install on Caddo/Bossier clay we default to including it in the base spec.

Base Course and Wearing Surface

For residential driveways: 4" of compacted #57 or #610 crushed stone base, then 2" of hot-mix asphalt wearing surface (typically a 3/8" or 1/2" nominal-maximum aggregate mix). For commercial lots: 6" base, 3" asphalt. For heavy-duty industrial: 8" base with cement treatment plus 4" asphalt.

Timing matters: base course goes down, gets compacted, gets proof-rolled to check for soft spots, then the asphalt goes on top the same day or the day after (before contamination or moisture change alters the base). On a well-scheduled crew, residential is one day, commercial is 2–5 days depending on size.
