Water in the Cracks Is Where Driveways Die

The single biggest killer of an asphalt surface in NW Louisiana isn’t traffic or UV — it’s water infiltration through cracks. Once a hairline crack lets water reach the base course, our expansive clay soils do the rest: the sub-grade swells wet, shrinks dry, and works the crack open a little more each cycle. What starts as a 1/8" hairline becomes a 1/2" open crack in 18 months, then an alligator-cracked failure zone by year three.

Crack sealing stops that cycle at the source. Hot-pour rubberized crack sealer (heated to 380°F and applied with a squeegee shoe) flows into the crack, bonds to both walls, and stays flexible through temperature cycling. Applied on time, it’s the highest-ROI intervention available on an asphalt surface.

What Gets Sealed and What Doesn't

Sealable: transverse and longitudinal cracks from 1/8" to about 3/4" wide, in surfaces where the base is sound and the mat isn’t alligator-cracked. Cracks wider than 3/4" usually indicate base movement and need full-depth patching, not just sealing. Alligator cracking is a base-failure signature, not a surface problem, and won’t respond durably to crack seal.

Cracks near a pavement edge that’s slumping downward indicate an edge failure — often base-course migration under a poorly-armored edge. Address the edge (edge armor, base rebuild) before sealing, or the seal will re-open within a season.

Every job is walked before it’s pricedNo serious paving contractor prices work off a photo alone. Request a callback and a local paving professional will schedule a walk-through and put a firm number in writing.

Timing and Cadence

For a well-maintained residential driveway in Shreveport: crack-seal on the same three-year cadence as sealcoat, and typically at the same visit. Sealcoat over freshly-sealed cracks gives a monolithic appearance. Commercial lots that develop cracks faster (fuel-service stations, heavy-truck routes) benefit from an interim inspection-and-seal visit at the 18-month mark.
