Half the asphalt patches in Shreveport are the wrong repair for the failure they’re covering. A skin patch over an alligator-cracked area lasts about eight months before it re-cracks in the same pattern — because the failure was in the sub-grade and the surface work didn’t touch the problem. Rule of thumb: cracks that repeat in the same pattern after a patch mean the base or sub-grade is failing, not the surface.
Proper diagnosis on a walk-through takes ten minutes: probe the depth of the crack, check for standing water when it rains, check for pumping fines (a milky slurry oozing from the joints), and look for the tell-tale rocking under a car tire that says the base is voided. Right diagnosis leads to right patch.
Full-depth patch is the durable answer for potholes and alligator-cracked areas: saw-cut a rectangular boundary around the failed section, excavate down through the failed base to competent sub-grade, rebuild base and asphalt to full spec. Cost $150–$400 per patch for a residential pothole, more for larger commercial failures.
Skin patch lays new asphalt over an existing surface without removing anything. It’s cheap ($3–$6/sqft) and appropriate when the surface has minor raveling but the base is sound. Wrong answer for cracking or potholes.
Infrared repair uses radiant heat to soften an existing surface, adds a small amount of virgin material, then rolls the whole area back to a monolithic patch. Great for utility cuts and small localized surface failures where the base is fine. Not a substitute for full-depth on a real pothole.
The 20% rule: once patched area covers roughly a fifth of the total surface, cumulative patch cost approaches the cost of a mill-and-overlay (see resurfacing) and you stop moving the problem around. For a 1,200 sqft residential driveway, that’s roughly 240 sqft of accumulated patches. Above that threshold, keep patching and you’re paying more per year than the overlay would cost annualized over its useful life.
For parking lots the threshold is similar; commercial lots also carry the additional pressure of aesthetics and customer-experience concerns that push toward overlay a bit sooner.
