Rural properties across Caddo, Bossier, and DeSoto Parishes commonly start life with a gravel drive — cheap to install, easy to extend as the property develops. Over time gravel gets tired: potholes form, gravel migrates onto the yard and into vehicle undercarriages, dust becomes a nuisance, and heavy rains wash out low points. Conversion to asphalt is a common upgrade that pays back in reduced maintenance, cleaner cars, better resale, and a driveway that actually looks intentional.
The good news: an existing gravel drive is a partial head start. There’s already a rough sub-grade in place, water is generally moving in the right direction (there was a reason someone put gravel there), and the site has been trafficked long enough that soft spots have revealed themselves. The bad news: gravel drives are almost never at proper grade for asphalt, and the existing gravel is rarely the right gradation to serve as an asphalt base.
Step one is a full site walk to assess the existing drive: is it wide enough (10’ minimum for single-vehicle, 20’ for two-way passing), does it have proper drainage, is there vegetation in the gravel that needs stripping. Step two is regrade — usually adding fill in low spots, cutting in high spots, and setting a consistent 1–1.5% cross-slope for drainage.
Step three is base course: the existing gravel gets scarified, tested for gradation, and either supplemented with new crushed-stone base or fully replaced with 4–6" of proper #57 or #610 stone. Compacted to spec. Step four is the asphalt mat: 2" residential, 3" if the drive will see farm equipment or delivery trucks. Total: 1–3 days on a typical residential conversion, longer for long rural drives.
Gravel-to-asphalt runs slightly cheaper than a full new install because the sub-grade is partially prepared and there’s no tear-out cost. Expect $4.00–$6.50 per square foot for a standard residential conversion in Shreveport and surrounding areas. Long rural drives (over 200 feet) get a small volume discount.
